What this calculator does

This calculator finds the arithmetic mean when you already know the total of a group of values and how many values are in that group. It is useful for totals such as scores, sales, or measurements when entering every individual value is unnecessary.

Formula used

Arithmetic mean = total of values ÷ number of values.

The count must describe the same set of values included in the total. If a value is added or removed, update both the total and the count before calculating.

Worked example

If 8 values add up to 640, the mean is 640 ÷ 8 = 80. A quick check is 80 × 8 = 640, which returns the original total.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculate the median?

No. Median requires the individual values to be ordered so the middle value can be identified.

Can I average percentages this way?

Only when the percentages have equal weight. Use a weighted mean when their weights differ.

Can the count be zero?

No. Division by zero is undefined, so the count must be greater than zero.
