Estimating paint quantity
This calculator estimates litres of paint from surface area, number of coats, and coverage per litre. It is intended for purchase planning, not as a guarantee of consumption for every paint or surface.
Inputs and field meanings
Review these values before running the tool. The labels below come from the actual form so the guidance matches what you will use on this page.
- Area m²: required, minimum 0.
- Number of coats: required, minimum 1.
- Coverage per liter m²: required, minimum 0.01.
Estimation method
Litres required = surface area × number of coats ÷ coverage in square metres per litre.
Coverage varies with product, surface texture, and application method. Use the manufacturer's stated coverage whenever available.
Room example
For 60 m² of paintable surface, two coats, and coverage of 10 m²/L, the theoretical quantity is 60 × 2 ÷ 10 = 12 litres.
What can change paint usage?
- Porous or rough surfaces may consume more paint.
- Subtract doors and windows when a more precise wall-area estimate is needed.
- Primer is a separate coating and is not automatically included in the finish-paint quantity.

It is the approximate area one litre covers in one coat, and it varies by product.
Should I buy extra paint?
