This calculator finds the percentage that one value represents of a total. It answers questions such as: what percentage is 30 out of 120?

Percentage formula
Percentage = part ÷ total × 100.
The total cannot be zero, and both values should be measured on the same basis before they are compared.
Worked example
If the part is 30 and the total is 120: 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%.
Quick checks
- If part equals total, the result should be 100%.
- If part is half the total, the result should be 50%.
- A result above 100% can be valid when the part exceeds the chosen reference total.
Percentage questions
Can a percentage be above 100%?
Yes, when the part is larger than the reference total used in the denominator.
Is this the same as percentage change?
No. This compares a part with a total. Percentage change compares a new value with an old value using a different formula.
Why can't total be zero?
The calculation divides by the total, and division by zero is undefined.
